So you're checking out mobile broadband internet toolbar you're wondering who's got some good coverage. You Best Adsl Modem have been burned by one of Streamyx Combo big 3 (Sprint, internet providers or AT&T) and you're determined not to let it happen again. You might live in a rural area somewhere that's known for poor reception. You might even be in a city that's supposedly 'covered' everywhere but your house.
One thing's for reliable web hosting though.
You do not want to get stuck in a 2 year contract with bad service.
Fear not. It's obvious you're one of the proactive types that take control of the situation and seek solutions to their problems. I'm here to provide you with answers. Now that we've gotten to know each other, let's get this started. Here's what the major providers have to offer.
N.B. Since this is an article, they won't let me provide maps that you can use. I'll provide a link at the end that'll take you to a one stop shop to check everyone's mobile broadband coverage.
Alltel
Alltel is like that friend you internet speed accelerator from a small town that moved to a big city and married a big shot lawyer. Who's the lawyer you ask? I'm sure you've heard of him. He goes by the name Verizon.
Before Verizon acquired Alltel last year, their coverage was so so. However, they made a delightfully smart broadband checking speed They partnered with Sprint for a nationwide roaming agreement that would last 10 years. Adsl Comparison to that they could boast having the largest mobile broadband network web ecommerce enough, Sprint did the same).
Since Alltel got married to Verizon, it's remains to be seen if she's gonna keep seeing Sprint on the side and for how long. Considering Verizon has never been with Sprint in the past, there's this inkling feeling that Verizon might cut ties. Nevertheless, Alltel is having her cake and eating it too. Right now she's got a 10 year roaming agreement with Sprint and a merger with Verizon who's known for their reliability.
But what about wireless broadband coverage where I live you say? Great question. I'd love to jump up in excitement about the innovative, cutting edge, GPS locating, interactive map technology Alltel has available for you to usebut I'd probably go to jail for false advertising.
Alltel's map is that bad.
You Baltimore Business Services zoom in like other maps. You can't enter your street address. All you can do is stare at the big map of the United States, click on a state and hope your street address is coveredor so they'd have you think.
Time to get all Sherlock Holmes (thankfully this is text so you can't hear my horrible English accent impression):
"Dear Watson, if Alltel is partnered up with Sprint or Verizon, or perhaps even both, what do can you deduce about their coverage?"
"Well Sherlock, wouldn't that mean Alltel's got expanded coverage through one or both of their networks?"
"Good Show Watson! Precisely! We can figure out Alltel's 'reach' by checking out maps provided by Sprint or Verizon! That'll show us where Alltel's got coverage too!"
The map they provide is good for figuring out coverage while you travel (you can see an overview of major areas), it's not great for figuring out mobile broadband coverage in your home town.
The Verdict:
Alltel's EVDO Revision A (read: highest speed) is available in major cities. A few up and coming places get EVDO Revision 0 (fast but not fastest) and everywhere else gets dialup speed. They're not the kings of coverage. They're average.
